Inhuman in your backyard

The world cries its outrage over the case of Faizi, an Afgan girl who was sentenced to prison after being raped on charges of adultery, and then upon her release ordered to marry her rapist as per Sharia law.

The comments that then followed were varied and diverse in their tones but unanimous in their indignity and outrage.

“pambihirang batas yan very unfair sa mga babae…kung may gusto ka sa isang babae rape mo lang masasayo na…wtf!”

“weird law…. unjustifiable.”

“they have stupid laws crafted by stupid men of a very stupid culture.”

“Kayong mga muslim ito ba ang ipinagmamayabang ninyong tamang batas? Mga hayop kayo!!!!! mga demonyo kayong lahat! Mga puntang ina ninyo mga hayop kayo!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“that’s a CAVE MAN’S LAW…..”

“And this country want to negotiate with Muslims? Wah!”

“Proud to be a Christian living in a Christian Country (place)”

“The Old Testament law is: any man who rapes a woman is to be stoned to death.”

“Afghan laws are not for humans. Very weird. Very muslim.”

“there really is something wrong with their brand of islam”

“Lets be thankful at sa pinas pinanganak ang mga nanay o mga kapatid nating babae.”

“how stupid muslim law woman rape then put in jail then married the rapist”

“wow! it’s ok to rape Muslim women. Convert now!”

I’m going under the general assumption here that most if not all Filipinos commenting on Yahoo! are Christians and therefore believe the teachings of the Bible. However, it seems they don’t read it and were unaware that the very same law appears if not originated from the Bible.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 ” If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.”

I made this very same statement in the articles comment section itself, adding that it was funny how people thought this was somehow unique to Islam and the Qu’ran and their venomous anger towards Afghan and Islamic culture are not only disproportionately misdirected but laughable as well. But for some reason my comment isn’t displayed anywhere on the page no matter how many time I checked.

In fact this certain chapter has much more to say on the conditions of sexual morality.

Deutronomy 22:23-27

23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.”

The only way a woman can be raped without being punished afterwards in some way can only occur if the woman was violated in a place so remote that it was unlikely anyone could have rescued her (Slim odds on that one) and that’s according to the Christian Bible.

There’s a pervasive notion that seems to depict Islam and Islamic teachings as barbaric and sexist to the point of being completely medieval in their dealings with such cases. I’m not sympathetic to Islam and Muslims in general and would agree on many points that Islam is a harmful religion if every word of it is taken seriously, but I think this assertion is completely unfair basically because the Jewish and Christian religions say and think along the same lines, more or less.

I guess the only fault Afghans and Muslims can have in this case is that they take their religion seriously or more seriously than everyone else does. What’s that verse about the splinter in your neighbors eye and a log in yours?

I guess my main point of contension is that most people in the Philippines (most of whom are Christians) who read this will take away a misplaced sense of moral superiority and confidence that they are in the right and they are the true children of God. When all the confidence that they exude only stems from ignorance to their own teachings.

In effect yes, Sharia law is barbaric and the Muslims that enforce its horrid teachings are stupid. As well as every other book that condones, allows and advices horrible, disgusting, amoral and terrible acts on humankind.
